First of all --------------- This is not finished yet, The computer I am on atm doesn't have microsoft word, so I'm using this journal as a way to save my progress while typing this tutorial so I don't get near the end and loose everything >.>. This will eventually be moved to my website, so I can pretty it up with pictures and stuff ^^

This tutorial will show you how I personally discovered how to put blinking eyes in a fursuit costume, as well as making a creature snarl. I don't claim to be an expert so my methods might not be the most effective, or suit your style of making costumes. But they work for me ^^. This tutorial is dedicated to a special someone! You know who you are because you asked for it, but I won't mention a name as I know you're keeping things secretive!

Blinking
-------

Making an animal costume blink is one of the next steps to bringing more realistic life to it. This is one of those things that when you know how to do it, you'll wonder why you didn't consider it sooner!

Materials needed:
Step 1-
Your eye (plastic or resin ect)
Stiff wire
Polymorph
Black pigment powder
Spare fabric to make the eyelid
Glue (Either hot glue or superglue can work as an example)

Step 2-
Miniature servo (this tutorial will be for using 2 servos, one for each eye, but it is possible to use one servo to control both)
Y lead cable for servo
Arduino Uno R3 board (Others available but I found this easiest)
Solderless Breadboard + Jumper Cables
Strip board
Soldering iron
Solder
Battery clip or other power source
Switch
Wires
Electrical tape

Here we go!
------------
First of all you need to make sure that there is enough room inside the head of your costume to fit everything in and the eye hole is large enough to accommodate the blinking movement of the eyelid.
This is what my most recent project looks like with the blinking eyes:
>>>>>>>>>>>Insert picture of hippo here<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
-----------
Step 1: Making the eyelid

This is the most important part, because if you get the shape wrong here the whole mechanism might not work later on.
Grab your eye (The one for the costume, not your own eye XD) as well as the wire. Bend the wire to the curved shape of the eye, following the diagram.
>>>>>>>>>>>>Insert diagram of wire over eye<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hold your wire where shown in the picture and try to rotate it over the surface of the eye (like it's blinking). If it rubs against the surface keep playing with the shape until it moves freely all the way up and down the eye, leave a gap to allow to the eyelid fabric to be attached to the wire.

I think I haven't sold my Seaborg yet so I will be able to get a scan of the sheet once my scanner is up and running again =3

happy new year :), I still remember your fernis (sorry if spelling's wrong) quadsuit, one of my favourites, and the snarls and everything has got me inspired for my secret quad next year. Hope you're going to may expo :)

Hellooo!! A happy new year to you too ^^

Hehe =3, I remember seeing you too! (Which is surprising because expo is usually a blurr for me afterwards XD)

Ohh, that's awesome, I love when people take ideas from others, because the cosplay community is like one big trade show of ideas =D, I keep taking ides from people when I see something I like. It helps us grow!

A secret?! I love secrets. Now you have me all curious as to when you might be plotting. I most defiantly hopefully will be going to May expo. Although I was meant to be going to October and things got in the way =/

Yeah, expo just goes too quickly, especially in quadsuits since you're trying hard not to pass out in those things. And trying to make sure people don't get on your back, was a pain to tell people don't ride my back when I was Epona, lol.
I hate it when things get in the way like that :(, however I plan things so far in advanced that in a way, it can be kind of annoying :p. But I guess that's the advantage of being your own boss really ^^. It would be cool to see you a may expo, I'll be going in my rainbow dash quadsuit (don't ask why I'm doing her, I thought it'd be funny) so I should be easy to spot.
Actually for my secret quad for may 2014 I may need some advice from you actually, would I be able to private message you about it?

Hahaha XD you're so right! I'm currently working on a water cooling system for a costume, but with it being winter I don't really want to test it XD.
I can imagine a saddle is basically a sign saying HERE SIT ON ME! How did you stop people trying? (has a costume coming up with a saddle)

You're like the complete opposite of me lol. Planning is one of my weakest points, or I plan plan plan plan, then don't stick to it at all D=

I'll definatly look out for rainbowness of colourfullness! I'll stand and be your guard and protect you =D I must say your progress is looking very sharp!

I'm always happy to help ^^ go for it!
